Context
Talking with Dwarkesh Patel about how people use Meta AI for social tasks such as preparing hard conversations, Zuckerberg said people want more connection than they have and that AI could help fill the gap. He added that he guessed society would "find the vocabulary" to explain why that is valuable. In a separate interview the same week, with Ben Thompson on Stratechery, he said: "for people who don’t have a person who’s a therapist, I think everyone will have an AI."
Crowd reaction
Widespread criticism
404 Media wrote that Zuckerberg was "apparently clueless that his own company hosts deceptive and harmful AI companions"; the clip went viral on social media that week, Entrepreneur reported X users criticizing him (one writer: friendship seen "through the lens of supply & demand"), a psychology professor told CNBC the idea is "definitely not supported by research", and Hinge CEO Justin McLeod called it "an extraordinarily reductive view of what a friendship is" and compared AI friends to junk food.
