The occasion
CBS 60 Minutes interview with Scott Pelley, 20 April 2025.
Context
After describing how AI might cut drug design from years to months or weeks, Hassabis was asked by Scott Pelley whether AI could end all disease, and answered that it is within reach (the 'that' in his answer, as the Tears in Rain essay reads it). In the same segment, per Time, he said that one day we can cure all disease with the help of AI.

Critical commentary
Mild and mostly retrospective. Arianna Huffington's Time essay quotes him and answers 'there's a big reason why not: human nature'; the Center for Humane Technology says the claim 'has been so rarely questioned' and that no complex chronic disease has been cured; in the Marcus thread (Aug 2026) Eric Topol calls Hassabis's 60 Minutes argument similar and Marcus calls it 'maybe the most naive things I have ever heard Hassabis say'. Derek Lowe's 'The End of Disease' (Science, 21 April 2025) is cited as an immediate critical reply by the Tears in Rain essay but science.org could not be read.
