“We basically have two major cost centers in the company: compute infrastructure and people-oriented things ... If we're investing more in one area to serve our community, then that means we have less capital to allocate to the other. So that means we do need to take down the size of the company somewhat”

The occasion
Meta company town hall (heard by Reuters), 30 April 2026.
Context
Zuckerberg addressed employees for the first time since Reuters reported the plan to lay off about 10% of staff (about 8,000 roles, from 20 May). The two quoted sentences are separated in Reuters by the words "Zuckerberg said in the session, heard by Reuters". He also said using AI tools internally "is not the thing that's driving layoffs" and that he had no "crystal ball plan for the next, like, three years".

Critical commentary
Reuters reported that the company's silence on the layoffs and a new program tracking employees' mouse movements, clicks and keystrokes to train AI agents "has sparked outrage among Meta employees", some of whom openly criticized Zuckerberg and other leaders on the internal forum. Tom's Hardware wrote that the timing "undercuts any suggestion that Meta is cutting jobs out of financial necessity" and called the trade of labor for compute "a dubious strategy"; TNW wrote that the company "is profitable. It is choosing to spend the money on machines." Mostly internal and press criticism.
