'We can't do computer graphics anymore without artificial intelligence. We compute one pixel, we infer the other 32': Jensen thinks AI is integral to next-gen graphics tech

“We can't do computer graphics anymore without artificial intelligence. We compute one pixel, we infer the other 32. ... And so we hallucinate, if you will, the other 32, and it looks temporally stable, it looks photorealistic, and the image quality is incredible, the performance is incredible”

The occasion
Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference, San Francisco (week of 9 September 2024), reported 13 September 2024.
Context
Asked at Goldman Sachs' Communacopia conference which AI use case excites him most, Huang answered computer graphics, describing how Nvidia's upscaling and frame generation render one pixel and infer 32. He added that inferring pixels uses far less energy than computing them.
Crowd reaction
Critical commentary
Mild. TechSpot frames the quote with gamers' worry that AI upscaling 'might become a requirement for good performance' and says the concern has merit, and its forum thread answers Huang with jokes ('Jensen (probably): Graphics just aren't feasible anymore'). PC Gamer opens with 'It's easy to dunk on AI' and ends on the jab 'if we could only make it more accurate instead of better at hallucinating, that'd be dandy', but is otherwise sympathetic ('he may have a point'). No outrage found for the 2024 line; the larger gamer backlash came with DLSS 5 in 2026 (already in the dataset).
