The occasion
The Verge interview (Decoder) after the launch of the new Bing, 7 February 2023.
Context
Hours after Microsoft showed an OpenAI-powered Bing, Nadella told The Verge that Google is 'the 800-pound gorilla' in search and that he hoped the new Bing would push it to respond. In the same answer he said he had 'the greatest of admirations for Google'.
Crowd reaction
Critical commentary
Mild and mostly retrospective. Contemporary commentary called it a playful-but-serious taunt, and Google's stock fell after its own Bard demo error that week; OfficeChai (2026-04-30) mocks the line as having aged badly ('Google sure seems to be dancing', market cap up 4x). No public outrage found.
