The occasion
X (post), 21 June 2025.
Context
Musk posted on X that the next Grok model would be used to rewrite the training corpus and then retrain on the result, because in his words there was 'far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data'. A follow-up post asked users for 'divisive facts' that are 'politically incorrect, but nonetheless factually true'. The post came days after Grok answers contradicted some of his own claims.
Crowd reaction
Widespread criticism
NYU professor emeritus Gary Marcus wrote on X: 'Straight out of 1984'; University of Milan logic professor Bernardino Sassoli de' Bianchi said 'Rewriting training data to match ideology is wrong on every conceivable level' (Cointelegraph). Raw Story called the plan 'straight out of an Orwellian nightmare'.
