The occasion
Financial Times interview (reported in February 2026); walked back on The Verge's Decoder podcast on 2026-06-08, reported 13 February 2026.
Context
Suleyman told the Financial Times that compute scaling would bring human-level performance on most professional computer-based tasks. The FT original is paywalled and was not read; The Verge confirms the quote ran in an FT report "in February" and reproduces it, and Unite.AI (dated 2026-02-13) reproduces it as a single quotation. In June 2026 Suleyman said on Decoder that he had said "tasks", "so that does not mean jobs".

Critical commentary
Unite.AI said "the 18-month timeline for universal automation strains credibility" given that most Copilot customers are still in pilots; The Verge headlined that Suleyman "walks back" the comment; a Windows Central reader called such predictions "scare-mongering rubbish ... purely laughable fiction" (quoted by Windows Central). Sceptical press plus a public walk-back, not mass outrage.
