“In fact, I would say we will quickly lose even the social permission to actually take something like energy, which is a scarce resource, and use it to generate these tokens, if these tokens are not improving health outcomes, education outcomes, public sector efficiency, private sector competitiveness across all sectors, small and large.”

The occasion
World Economic Forum, Davos: conversation with BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, 20 January 2026.
Context
At Davos Nadella said AI must show real gains in health, education and productivity, in more places than the tech industry, or it will lose public tolerance for the energy it uses. In the same conversation he said it would be a bubble if only tech firms benefited. Windows Central's text of the same passage is slightly shorter; this is Tom's Hardware's fuller version.

Critical commentary
Commentary rather than public anger. Futurism mocked the Davos remarks (bubble talk): 'If AI fails, in other words, it's everyone else's fault for not using it', and tied them to his 'slop' post weeks earlier; Windows Central ('says AI needs to prove its worth') noted the remarks came weeks after his 'slop' post, which it says was 'earning Microsoft a new nickname', Microslop. The 'social permission' sentence itself drew no direct criticism in the pages read; Neowin ran a critical headline (page blocked, not read).
