“Well, first of all, they're completely wrong ... It's not post-processing, it's not post-processing at the frame level, it's generative control at the geometry level”

The occasion
Press Q&A with Tom's Hardware at Nvidia GTC 2026, 17 March 2026.
Context
At GTC 2026 Nvidia showed DLSS 5, a generative-AI rendering step that critics said altered faces and art direction. The day after the reveal, Tom's Hardware editor-in-chief Paul Alcorn asked Huang in a press Q&A about the reaction from gamers, and he answered that they misunderstood the technology, which he said stays under the game developer's control. Days later, on the Lex Fridman podcast, he said 'I think their perspective makes sense and I can see where they're coming from, because I don't love AI slop myself.' The Q&A is dated the day after the keynote (Tom's Hardware quotes the question as 'revealed yesterday' and published on 2026-03-17).
Crowd reaction
Outrage
Futurism (2026-03-17) reports the reaction to the DLSS 5 demo was 'overwhelmingly negative': gamers and developers called it 'slop' and a 'betrayal' of artistic intent, and memes spread; on 2026-03-25 it adds the feature was 'relentlessly mocked in memes and nicknamed sloptracing'. TechRadar and GIGAZINE headline the 'completely wrong' answer as a response to that ridicule.
